About the ensemble
Eliška Brtnická is a Czech performer, choreographer, dramaturge and director who specializes in contemporary circus and physical theatre. She graduated in non-verbal theatre from HAMU in Prague, where she completed her PhD in 2018 with a focus on contemporary circus. In 2010 she founded the company Cirkus Mlejn, under the name of which she creates her projects. In 2017 she completed a one-year course in circus dramaturgy at the prestigious French school CNAC in Châlons-en-Champagne. Brtnická is also the dramaturge of the international festival Fun Fatale. In 2023 she won the main prize of the Czech Dance Platform for the production "Thin Skin" and was nominated for the Thalia Award 2022 for the project "Hang Out".
About the show
"Chimney" is a documentary and movement performance that takes place directly on the chimney and brings facts and emotions associated with this symbol of the industrial era. Nowadays, many disused chimneys are being demolished and the memory of the site is disappearing with their demolition. The performance explores the possibility of preserving these structures. The audience is seated in beach chairs and each chaise longue comes with headphones with expert commentary interspersed with the experiences of members of the Association of Czech Chimney Sweeps. The movement of the three performers on the chimney reveals its physical parameters - its dimensions, stability, massiveness and material, but above all its inherent verticality.
The performance was created as part of the CIRQUEON residency programme and was supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the State Fund for Culture of the Czech Republic, the City of Prague and funded by the European Union - Next Generation EU.
The performance "Chimney" had its world premiere on 15 July 2024 at the 16thannual Za dveřmi festival in Prague's Holešovice and was performed at the Cirk-UFF festival in Trutnov.
